I’ve had more clients than ever asking me about hair shedding, thinning, breakage, and overall hair health. A lot of people are going through changes with weight loss, stress, hormones, nutrition, medications, and everything else life throws at us, and unfortunately, hair tends to show it.

There is no single shampoo, supplement, or miracle product that fixes every kind of hair loss. But there are products that can support a healthier scalp, help protect fragile hair, reduce breakage, improve moisture, and make your hair feel stronger and easier to manage while you’re figuring out what your hair needs.

These are the types of products I recommend most often to clients and the ones I’d reach for if your goal is healthier, stronger hair without making your routine ridiculously complicated.

1. Start With Your Scalp

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

If you’re noticing more shedding than usual, dryness, buildup, or just feel like your scalp needs some attention, I like adding a scalp-focused product into the routine rather than immediately buying ten different “hair growth” products.

Look for something that helps keep the scalp clean, comfortable, and balanced without being overly harsh.

What I look for:
A lightweight scalp serum, treatment, or cleanser that supports the scalp without leaving a heavy oily residue.

Kérastase Genesis Serum

This is one I personally use and genuinely love. It is definitely on the higher end price-wise, but I like how lightweight it feels on the scalp and how easily it fits into a regular hair-care routine without making the roots feel heavy or greasy.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density

If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, this is a great option. I’ve recommended this one to clients as well and have seen good results with consistent use, so it’s an easy choice if you want scalp support without spending quite as much.

2. Use a Shampoo That Cleans Without Stripping

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people choosing shampoo based solely on whatever is trending.

Your shampoo should clean your scalp and hair well enough to remove oil, buildup, styling products, and dry shampoo without making your hair feel like straw afterward.

For anyone dealing with fragile or thinning hair, I usually prefer something gentle enough for regular use but still effective at actually cleansing.

K18 PEPTIDE PREP Detox Shampoo
This is one I personally use and genuinely love. It is definitely on the higher end price-wise, but I like how lightweight it feels on the scalp and how easily it fits into a regular hair-care routine without making the roots feel heavy or greasy.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo
For the second wash, I like something that cleans well but also leaves the hair feeling soft and balanced, and this is one of my favorite all-around options. It works especially well when the hair is feeling dry or needs a little more moisture without making the routine complicated.

3. Don’t Skip Conditioner

If your hair is shedding or feeling thinner, it can be tempting to avoid conditioner because you’re afraid it will weigh your hair down.

But dry, tangled hair is much more likely to break.

A good conditioner helps with softness, detangling, elasticity, and manageability, which means less pulling and snapping when you brush and style.

Apply it mostly through your mids and ends instead of piling it directly onto the scalp.

Pureology Hydrate Conditioner
I like pairing this with the Hydrate shampoo because it gives the hair a really nice balance of moisture and softness without making it feel overly heavy. It’s a great everyday conditioner, especially for dry, color-treated, or highlighted hair that needs a little extra help staying manageable.

4. Add A Bond Repair Treatment to your routine.

If your hair is highlighted, color-treated, heat-styled, feeling weak, snapping easily, or just not behaving the way it used to, this is one of the first places I would look. Bond repair has become such a big part of modern hair care because it focuses on strengthening the hair from within instead of only making the outside feel softer for a day.

This is especially important for blondes and anyone doing regular chemical services, because the stronger the hair is internally, the better it can handle everything we ask it to do. A good bond repair treatment can help improve strength, reduce breakage, and make the hair feel noticeably more resilient over time.

I also think this is one of those categories where consistency matters more than piling on multiple products. You do not need every bond product from every line — you just need one good treatment that makes sense for your hair and that you’ll actually use regularly.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
This is one of my favorite bond-repair treatments, especially for highlighted, chemically treated, or heat-damaged hair. It helps strengthen the hair, improve the way it feels over time, and reduce that weak, compromised feeling without turning your routine into a whole project..

5. Use a Leave-In Conditioner

If I could get more people to consistently use one product, it would probably be a leave-in conditioner.

It gives you another layer of moisture and protection, makes detangling easier, and can help reduce the amount of unnecessary breakage happening during brushing and styling.

This is especially helpful for longer hair, highlighted hair, dry ends, or hair that tangles easily.

UNITE 7SECONDS Detangler
This is one of those products I recommend constantly because it makes detangling so much easier without making the hair feel heavy. It adds softness, helps with manageability, and is especially great for longer, highlighted, color-treated, or easily tangled hair.

6. Heat Protection Is Not Optional

If you use a blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron, or hot brush, use heat protection.

Hair that is already fragile does not need additional stress from repeated high-temperature styling.

A good heat protectant helps create a barrier between your hair and the heat and can make a noticeable difference in how your hair looks and feels over time.

7. Be Gentle With Wet Hair

Wet hair is more vulnerable to stretching and breakage, so the brush you use matters.

I prefer a flexible detangling brush that moves through knots rather than ripping through them.

Start at the ends and work your way upward instead of starting at the scalp and dragging every knot down through the length of your hair.

Wet Brush
This is one of my go-to brushes for detangling because the flexible bristles move through the hair without feeling like they’re ripping through every knot. It’s especially useful on wet or fragile hair when you want to be a little gentler and cut down on unnecessary pulling and breakage.

8. Protect Your Ends With a Lightweight Oil or Serum

A small amount of oil or serum through the ends can help reduce friction, improve shine, smooth frizz, and make dry or fragile hair feel much better.

You do not need half a bottle. A little goes a long way.

Keep it mostly through your ends unless the product is specifically designed for scalp use.

Verb Ghost Oil
This is a really nice option when you want shine and softness without making the hair feel heavy or greasy. I especially like it for smoothing the ends, helping with frizz, and giving dry or color-treated hair a more polished finish.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil
If you want something a little more luxurious, this is the one. It leaves the hair feeling incredibly soft and polished, adds beautiful shine, and is especially nice through the mids and ends when you want that more finished, salon-quality feel.

There are a million supplements marketed for hair, skin, and nails, and I don’t think you need to take everything TikTok tells you to take. If you want to add a hair supplement to your routine, I’d rather see you choose one thoughtfully and stick with it consistently than have an entire cabinet full of gummies and powders.

I generally look for formulas designed to support overall hair health with nutrients commonly involved in normal hair growth and strength. I also think of supplements as one piece of the puzzle — something that can support your routine alongside good nutrition, scalp care, and being a little gentler with the hair you already have.

Nutrafol Women’s Hair Growth Supplement
This is one I’ve seen a lot of clients use when they’re dealing with shedding or thinning, and I’ve had enough time behind the chair to see which things seem to make a noticeable difference for people. It’s definitely one of the pricier options, but it’s one I’m comfortable recommending if you want a more comprehensive hair supplement.

Micro Ingredients Pumpkin Seed Oil with Saw Palmetto
If Nutrafol feels like more of an investment than you want to make, this is a much more affordable option I like for overall hair-support supplementation. It combines pumpkin seed oil with saw palmetto, and I like it as a simpler choice for someone who wants to add something into their routine without spending a ton.

Your Routine Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated

You really do not need twelve different products to have a good hair routine.

For most people, a solid routine is just knowing what your hair needs and using the right products consistently. That usually means a shampoo and conditioner that work for your hair, a leave-in for moisture and detangling, heat protection if you use hot tools, and one treatment that addresses your biggest concern.

That treatment might be a bond repair product if your hair is damaged, a scalp treatment if shedding or scalp health is your main concern, or something more moisturizing if your hair is dry and brittle.

The goal is not to keep adding more and more products. The goal is to have a few things that actually make sense for your hair and fit into your life.

Your hair is only going to be as good as the routine you can realistically keep up with.

Final Thoughts

After 17 years behind the chair, I’ve learned that healthy hair usually comes down to a few simple things: using products that actually make sense for your hair, being consistent, and not overcomplicating the routine.

These are the same kinds of products and habits I would recommend to someone sitting in my chair. Not because they’re trendy, and not because you need a shelf full of products, but because they can help support stronger, healthier-looking hair and make your day-to-day routine a little easier.

Your hair does not need a perfect routine. It just needs the right one for you.
